In another significant move towards integrating advanced air mobility (AAM) into urban infrastructure, the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) has selected Downtown Skyport LLC—a consortium of Skyports Infrastructure and Groupe ADP—to operate the Downtown Manhattan Heliport at Pier 6. Following Atlantic Aviation's award earlier this year to manage the East 34th Street Heliport, this five-year concession agreement, under this agreement, Downtown Skyport LLC is committed to transforming the heliport into a hub for sustainable transportation. Plans include the installation of electric charging infrastructure to accommodate electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, positioning New York City at the forefront of urban air mobility. Commencing February 1, 2025, the award includes options for three additional five-year renewals, potentially extending the partnership through 2045.
This initiative aligns with NYCEDC's broader vision to enhance urban transportation through sustainable and innovative solutions. The integration of eVTOL operations is expected to reduce urban congestion, lower emissions, and provide efficient transportation alternatives for residents and visitors. The selection of an agnostic operator for the heliport ensures that the facility will be accessible to a wide range of AAM aircraft and use cases, fostering a competitive and inclusive environment for emerging technologies.
As New York City prepares for the anticipated certification of eVTOL aircraft by the FAA as early as 2025, this development marks a pivotal step in the city's commitment to embracing advanced air mobility and sustainable urban transportation solutions, and another indicator to heliports and airports in the region that now is the time to begin preparing for the introduction of AAM.
